SPOON CARVING: WOODWORKING WONDERS
April 20th, Saturday, 10AM
Trees have been used by people to make useful and beautiful objects as far back as we can imagine. Spend a few hours learning to transform pieces of white ash from White Memorial Conservation Center’s landscape into a spoon or ladle (or both if you’re a quick study). Instruction includes how to use tools such as knives, chisels, hatchets and saw safely and effectively—a great introduction to woodcarving of any kind. Feel free to bring along your favorite carving knife or wood saw if you have, if not, teacher Andy Dobos has plenty to share. Make sure to register in advance as participation is limited to 10 people. $25 - 50.

DYLAN PERILLO ORCHESTRA CONCERT: A BIGGER BAND
April 25th, Thursday, 7:30PM
The Dylan Perillo Orchestra will be performing at Dewey Hall, complete with their six-piece horn section, violin, vocalist and rhythm section. The group hails from Albany and performs regular sell-out concerts at the famed Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs NY. Their repertoire is made up of a variety of popular American music from 1890-1950 and they have a particular passion for the songbook of the 1920s. Enjoy their unique interpretation of classic and not-so-classic, jazz-influenced compositions. There will even be space to dance along! $15 - 20.

Enjoy an engaging conversation as Heidi Pitlor, editor of The Best American Short Stories, delves deep into the writing life of Lauren Groff, New York Times Bestselling author. Asking questions not typically asked of female writers, Pitlor will get to the core of what it means to be a fiction author today. Groff is the author of five books, two of which were finalists for the National Book Awards: the novel Fates and Furies, and the story collection Florida.She has been named a Guggenheim and Radcliffe Fellow, one of Granta’s Best of Young American Novelists, and has five stories in the Best American Short Stories Anthology, edited by Heidi Pitlor. $15 - 25.
